Out of all the productions that I saw and found interesting, I saved ONE for dessert, like a good cake.
A series that was never supposed to happen, a series in which there are no erotic scenes and attracted hundreds of millions of viewers, a series that does not seem to reveal anything new. A series that exceeded the wildest expectations of director Dallas Jenkins, because in the best of times he expected a maximum of $ 100,000 for production, and received $ 10 million from people of goodwill around the world.
„The Chosen”
Contrary to appearances, the title of the film does not refer to the main character – Jesus of Nazareth, but to those he calls; and it all starts with twelve men of different ages, education, character, skills and lifestyles, who one day drop everything and decide to go into the unknown, not really knowing what they are really signing up for.
They are all Jews, that is, they are waiting for the coming of the messiah from the Scriptures who will save their nation and bring eternal peace. They hear about him from the day he was born – successive prophets wrote about him; Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Micah…. The Israelites, who have been living under the Roman occupation for years, want freedom and sovereignty. And suddenly He, the benjosif (Joseph’s son), appears and immediately arouses aversion („What good can come from Nazareth?” – John 1:46) and consternation, as he confidently begins to talk about new, subversive things. (Mark 6:3) but more people arise who are drawn to Him, who are curious about Him, listen to Him attentively, and soon are ready to follow Him wherever He sends them, even to death.
But before that happens, I want to tell you about the first three seasons of The Chosen.
Jesus of flesh and blood
The plot of the series is not surprising if you know the events of the Bible, but the plot does not start with the birth of Jesus, but with …. people creating history known from the pages of the Holy Bible; Mary Magdalene, Matthew, Zebedee, Nicodemus, the popular twelve, and seemingly random people on Jeshu’s path – so precious to Him; freed, healed. Chosen.
What struck me immediately was the reality of the characters – they are people just like all of us; of flesh and blood. They lead their ordinary, everyday lives, they have their vices, their problems. Jesus is no exception; he has a mother, brothers, sisters, a house, his own room. His family is not perfect; Josef has probably been dead for a long time (we meet him in flashbacks), although he has a supportive mother, but also brothers who consider him crazy. He has devoted friends (Lazarus and his sisters) and is gaining more and more attention as an itinerant preacher – at some point he separates himself from his family and goes to look for a new one.
So the twelve join Him…. and over time dozens of others, hundreds, thousands …. today millions, billions…
Jeshu has „that thing”; solid education, life wisdom, and above all, he is open to other people; he knows how to talk to everyone, and he wants to bring people closer to the image of the Father and his kingdom – he talks about the kingdom with bricklayers in a way familiar to them, with fishermen he uses fishing metaphors, with merchants – these commercial metaphors. He finds a common language with everyone, and soon he not only talks, but also heals ” all kinds of disease „
And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people. Then His fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those who were demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics; and He healed them.
(Matthew 4, 23-24)
You’re probably wondering what language the actors speak – English, but it’s broken English – you get the impression that it’s not their native language. This fact does not have to be disappointing – the Israel of that time gathered people of different cultures and languages; while Jesus spoke Aramaic (a variant of Hebrew), Hebrew, Greek and Latin were also spoken in those areas. Just as today for us – citizens of the world, the most popular language after the native one is English, so the world at that time was familiar with the above-mentioned languages.
However, the universal language of Jeshu was to become one language – the language of love.
Who is this series for?
For everyone and each one. For anyone who would like to watch Jesus from a safe distance, about whom they have heard since childhood, and in fact do not know much, because the presented Jesus was always dehumanized, distant, high on the cross and sad.
Jeshu from The Chosen is a man who sweats in the heat and is thirsty. He is a practical, life person, he knows how the world, money, oil and the sword work. It brings reverie as well as genuine joy.
He shares his human lot with all his neighbors, but he has something that others do not have and he wants to give it to them: the spirit of God along with the whole package. He wants to free people to love, which has the power to change the whole life, and thus – the world.
This is a series about those who would like to experience the adventure of life, feel special, chosen, experience something more. And it is also possible today, for you, the viewer – the then elected opened the door to green pastures to everyone who only believes. (John 10:7-11) their mission is not over, but it has gained a butterfly effect that you can benefit from today. I encourage you, I don’t force you – watch The Chosen first and decide if you would let such a Jesus into your life. I did it in 2005 and it was my best decision.
